VDV Technicians

What Do VDV (Voice, Data, Video) Technicians Do?
The VDV technician must be able to layout, assemble, install, repair and test entire low voltage, voice, data and video systems. VDV technicians must be mechanically inclined, and enjoy working with mathematical formulas. They primarily use low voltage wiring or fiberoptics for telephone and computer systems, as well as fire or security alarms.

Working Conditions
Work is done both indoors and outdoors in all temperatures, weather and environmental conditions. The trade, at times, requires considerable physical effort for lifting, carrying materials, ladders and tools, and climbing ladders and scaffolds, or powered lifts. The VDV technician must be comfortable working at a variety of heights. Most job functions require the use of hand and power tools.

Interest and Temperament
The VDV technician needs strong skills in reading, communications, mathematics and science. Certain physical abilities are very important for successful completion of training.

General Qualifications

  • Minimum age of seventeen and a half

Educational Background Recommended

  • math, physics, physical science, mechanical drawing , CAD, computer science, related careertechnical courses

Admission Requirements of the Joint Apprentice Committee

  • High school diploma or G.E.D., with full year of Algebra I w/passing grade, (provision of high school transcript or G.E.D. certificate/score sheet)
  • Tests
  • Interview (score determines selection for program)
  • Selected candidates are required to pass a drug screening test and physical

Terms of Apprenticeship Training

  • Apprenticeship shall be three (3) years
  • Minimum of 4500 hours of on-the-job training
  • Minimum of 480 hours of classroom related training per year
  • Indentured to the Toledo Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee
  • Starting pay – 55% of Journeyperson Technician rate
  • Probationary period of 2000 hours of on-the-job training and satisfactory completion of related classroom training during such time
  • Wage increases every period as determined by satisfactory completion of required on-the-job training hours and related classroom training
