Today’s Roofers & Waterproofers:
- waterproof and weatherproof buildings
- apply shingles made from fiberglass,
slate, tile, and cedar or composite material
such as felt rubber membrane work with
varnishes, lacquers, enamels and other
materials
- work mainly outdoors in all kinds of
weather
- are active workers with much climbing,
kneeling, standing, and walking
- often work at heights and have a good
sense of balance

What Do Roofers/Waterproofers Do?
Roofers install and repair the surfaces of
buildings to prevent water damage to the inside
of facilities. Roofers can work with composition
shingles, tile or slate roofs. Roofers use
modern and simple tools to apply shingles and
covering that provide the surface protection.
Working Conditions
Roofers generally work outside, in a variety
of weather conditions. They do a great deal of
lifting, kneeling and climbing. Roofers need to
be extremely safety conscious because their work
is done in high places, on ladders, scaffolding,
and roofs, as well being aware of
weather-related issues. Interest and
Temperament
Roofers must have no fear of height; have a
good sense of balance and a better-than average
sense of safety for themselves and their
co-workers. Persons wishing to enter this type
of work should enjoy working with their hands
and working outside, sometimes under unpleasant
weather conditions.
General Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18
- Good physical condition (must be
physically able to perform the work of the
trade)
- Applicants selected must be willing to
take a physical exam
- American Citizen or declaration of
intent
Educational Background Recommended
- Math, science, mechanical drawing
Admission Requirements of the
Joint Apprentice Committee
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
(provision of high school transcript
or G.E.D. certificate/score sheet)
- Tests
- Interview
- 30 Days of work experience (or
helper)
- Drug/alcohol testing in
accordance with the JATC written
policy
Terms of Apprenticeship
Training
- Apprenticeship shall be four
(4) years
- Minimum of 6000 hours of
on-the-job training
- Minimum of 144 hours of
related classroom instruction
per year
- Probation period – Six
months
- Indentured to Joint
Apprenticeship Committee and
assigned to a roofing contractor
- Raises every six months if
training hours are secured
