What Do Mechanical Equipment Services
Technicians Do?
Mechanical Equipment Services Technicians are
responsible for installing, servicing and
repairing a variety of important systems that go
into a variety of buildings, both residential
and commercial. The systems that they install
and repair control the temperature and general
air quality of the building. Mechanical
Equipment Services Technicians work with a variety of equipment,
which allows them to install and repair
water-based heating systems; oil, gas and
electric systems; as well as solar heating
systems. From refrigeration units to air
conditioning and heaters, motors and compressors
to temperature controls and ventilating
equipment, Mechanical Equipment Services
Technicians make
sure that everything is kept running smoothly.
Working Conditions
Mechanical Equipment Services Technicians can work
indoors or outdoors, often in places with
extreme temperatures because of systems that
they are working to repair. They use a variety
of heavy equipment, and must be very
knowledgeable about safety practices and
teamwork. Mechanical Equipment Services
Technicians are
constantly learning new technical skills because
the systems that they work with are often
changing and improving. Mechanical Equipment
Services Technicians are often called upon to fix things
fast, and must diagnose a problem then apply
skills and knowledge to create a solution.

supervision.
General Qualifications
- Minimum age of 17 and a half
- Physically capable of performing work
Educational Background Recommended
- Reading, math, drafting and blueprint
reading
Apprentice Admission Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D. (provision
of high school transcript or G.E.D.
certificate/score sheet)
- Interview
- Application
- Placed in a “pool” of applicants
Terms of Apprenticeship Training
- Apprenticeship shall be five (5) years
- Minimum of 8500 hours of on-the-job
training
- Minimum of 3 hours of related classroom
instruction per week
