What Do Laborers Do?
The construction laborer is an occupation
that does have an apprenticeship program.
Laborers must have common knowledge of all work
performed by building trades people because they
are tenders or helpers of many other crafts.
They often operate small power tools, work in
demolition, and help on highway work, mixing
mortar for bricklayers and lime for plasterers.
A laborer must have a broad knowledge of tool
use and safety.
Working Conditions
The work of a laborer can be very physically
demanding, and can occur both at great heights
and depths. Laborers work in all weather
conditions, and spend much of their time
bending, lifting and carrying heavy materials.
Laborers must be very aware of safety, both
their co-workers’ and their own, and often wear
hard hats, shoes and protective clothing.
Experience and interests vary widely among
laborers because the field includes so many job
tasks. Interest and Temperament

Persons entering this occupation should be
willing to perform their work well, take pride

Apprenticeship Admission Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D
(provision of high school transcript or
G.E.D. certificate/score sheet)

Terms of Apprenticeship Training
- Apprenticeship shall be three
(3) years
- Minimum of 4000 hours of
on-the-job training
- Minimum of 144 hours of
classroom instruction per year
