Career Information: Today’s Glaziers:

  • cut, fit and install various types of glass
  • construct and install side lights, aluminum entrances, and porcelain panels
  • work in homes, apartments, skyscrapers, schools and more
  • trained to use high-tech, computer-based tools and systems
  • sometimes required to work from swing stages on high buildings
  • perform much of their work outdoors

What Do Glaziers Do?
Glaziers cut and install all types and sizes of glass in homes, buildings, doors and windows. Glass is used for insulation, decoration, and security. Plate glass comes in a variety of thicknesses and types. Glaziers can also cut and install indoor glass, such as mirrors, bathroom doors/windows or tables.

Working Conditions
Glaziers work both indoors and outside, depending on the job. Window fabricating and some installations are done indoors; however, glaziers do much of their work outdoors or in unheated areas. Glaziers do a great deal of standing, lifting and carrying with some work at heights.

Interest and Temperament
A glazier must be able to work carefully and often without close supervision. Glaziers must be adaptable to a wide variety of working conditions. The job requires a considerable amount of bending, kneeling, lifting and standing.

General Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Must be physical capable of performing the work of the trade

Educational Background Recommended

  • Math, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing

Apprenticeship Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. (provision of high school transcript or G.E.D. certificate/score sheet)
  • Tests
  • Interview
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Drug/alcohol testing in accordance with the JATC written policy
  • Operates under the “Intent To Hire” Program

Terms of Apprenticeship Training

  • Apprenticeship shall be four (4) years
  • Probationary period 500 work hours
  • Minimum of 144 hours of related classroom instruction per year
  • Indentured to Joint Apprenticeship Committee & Contractor
  • Raises every six months if training hours are secured
