Today’s Floorlayers:
- cut, fit and install hardwood flooring
and various types of underlayment to ensure
smooth level surfaces for the finished floor
- scribe, cut, fit, layout and seam tile
and “sheet stock” in a variety of patterns
- are skillful in cutting, binding,
sewing, and installing carpet
- work from the specifications of
architects and interior designers and must
be good at estimating materials and doing
layout
- specialize in geometric floor design

What Do Floorlayers Do?
Floorlayers cut and install a variety of
underlayment materials and hardwood floors to
create level floors. They can cut and fit tile
or “sheet stock” in patterns. Floorlayers also
install carpet, and must be skilled in cutting
and sewing for this purpose. Floorlayers work
with blueprints and patterns, and often install
geometrical designs.
Working Conditions
Floorlayers generally work in a team, often
indoors. Floor coverings are installed on all
types of surfaces – wood, concrete, drywall and
metal. Therefore, floorlayers must be
knowledgeable in a variety of adhesion methods.
The physical demands on a floorlayer can involve
bending and kneeling.
Interest and Temperament
Persons entering this occupation should be
willing to perform their work well and to take
pride in craftsmanship. They must also enjoy
working with their hands and have the ability to
think for themselves without constant
supervision.
General Qualifications
- Minimum age of 17 and a half
- Physically capable of performing work
Educational Background Recommended
- Reading, math, drafting and blueprint
reading
Apprenticeship Admission Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D. (provision
of high school transcript or G.E.D.
certificate/score sheet)
- Interview
- Application
- Placed in a “pool” of applicants
- Tests
Terms of Apprenticeship Training
- Apprenticeship shall be four (4) years
- Minimum of 5600 hours of on-the-job
training
- Minimum of 160 hours of related
classroom instruction per year
