Electricians
What Do Electricians Do?
Electricians have a variety of specialized
skills, both in installation and repair of
electrical systems. Electricians install wiring
for lighting, temperature control, and power in
residential and commercial buildings. They must
be trained in both national and local safety
codes, because the danger level in this field is
relatively high. In addition to safety and
electrical training, Electricians must also be
able to read blueprints.
Working Conditions
Electricians work both indoors and outdoors, and
must work in all temperatures and weather. They
are sometimes required to use physical effort to
carry materials, or climb ladders and
scaffolding. Electricians work with precise
tools, including power drills and saws.
Interest and Temperament
The electrician will be lifting, carrying, and
installing equipment and fixtures, working with
tools, and connecting wire and cables which are
color coded. Due to the constant changes and
innovations in the electrical industry, ongoing
training and education is essential. Certain
physical abilities are very important for
successful completion of training and a career.
General Qualifications
- Minimum age of 17 and a half
Educational Background Recommended
- math, physics, chemistry, physical
sciences, industrial arts, mechanical
drawing and CAD, computer science, related
career-technical courses
Admission Requirements of the Joint
Apprentice Committee
- High school diploma or G.E.D., with full
year of Algebra I w/passing grade (provision
of high school transcript or G.E.D.
certificate/score sheet)
- Interview (score determines selection
for program)
- Provision of military
training/experience verification
- Reviewing attendance records, grades,
work history, and past performance
- Selected candidates are required to pass
a drug screening test and physical
Terms of Apprenticeship Training
- Apprenticeship shall be five (5) years
(6 periods)
- Minimum of 8000 hours on-the-job
training
- Minimum of 180 hours of related
classroom instruction per year
- Probationary period of 2000 hours of OJT
and completion of classroom training
- Indentured to the Toledo Electrical
Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee
- Wage increases every period as
determined by satisfactory work (OJT hours)
and classroom performance
